CROWNS

(aka “caps”)

KING ME!

What is a dental crown? Crowns are like tooth-shaped caps that fit over an entire tooth or set of teeth. They can be used for cosmetic purposes like correcting a discolored or misshapen tooth. They also help protect and support a tooth that has been damaged by decay, cracking, or other dental procedures, like a very large filling or root canal. Crowns are used in dental implant and fixed bridge procedures as well.

As with veneers, crowns can match existing tooth color or, if the patient prefers, can be lighter and brighter. Porcelain crowns let light shine through, just like real teeth, so they look completely natural.

Cosmetic Dentistry of Murfreesboro believes in saving a tooth or teeth whenever possible. This is one reason restorative dentistry patients prefer to come to us for dental crowns in Murfreesboro.

Crowns That Are Regal and Rugged

Cosmetic Dentistry of Murfreesboro offers dental crowns made from the highest quality porcelain. We also use the latest technology and best support materials to ensure all dental crowns are strong and long-lasting. (This is where we’d normally insert some sort of corny “crowns fit for a king” joke, but instead we’ll just say our crowns are regal and rugged.)

The real magic, however, is found within Dr. Greg Nicholson’s renowned dental artistry. This is where we encourage our patients to dream BIG, because he doesn’t just restore smiles . . . he transforms them. Whether you need one tooth repaired or want to brighten your entire smile, his remarkable skill and technique produce brilliant results.

And our family-friendly, patient-focused approach to dental crowns applies to all life stages and ages. At each appointment, we make sure you are as comfortable as possible; whether you need a local anesthetic, a chair adjustment, or additional assistance, we help you relax and feel safe.

(We’d like to point out that we didn’t use “majestic” or “royal” anywhere in the preceding paragraphs. You’re welcome.)

Your Crown Fitting and Coronation

Even though they involve more work than veneers, the general steps in the dental-crown procedure are very similar. It is very important that your crown fit properly.

Dr. Nicholson begins with a dental consultation that includes an examination of the affected tooth, surrounding teeth, gums, and bone structure to help him determine if a crown is your best option. Known as the “Gentle Giant” dentist in Murfreesboro, Dr. Nicholson takes great care to make dental crown procedures as pain-free as possible—so expect him to take a few extra minutes to address any concerns you may have. Together, you will decide how to move forward.

Just like veneers, the first step for dental crowns begins with preparing the affected tooth or teeth. Dr. Nicholson gently smooths the whole tooth to make room for the crown. If necessary, he may also use a filling compound to replace any missing portion of the tooth, as long as it helps support the dental crown.

From there, he makes a digital intra-oral scan of your teeth (no more goopy impressions to make you gag!) for a customized, precision fit. In most cases, he will insert a temporary crown while your permanent crown is crafted. The average turnaround time for crowns is usually one week; please note that because dental crowns are permanent, it is key that they sit perfectly. Sometimes, extra time is needed to ensure proper fit and comfort.

Upon your return appointment, Dr. Nicholson will place the crown and check things like your bite, look, and overall fit. He will answer any questions before permanently sealing the crown. And since dental health education is one of the most valuable tools we provide our patients, we will make sure you know how to properly care for your crown before you leave that day. (It’s not exactly a coronation, but it is a big deal . . . so we might be able to locate a fanfare trumpet and red carpet for the occasion.)

The goal is that your crown becomes so natural, even you don’t notice it!

THIS IS US

As a full-service dental design studio, Cosmetic Dentistry of Murfreesboro also offers the following cosmetic services:

  • Teeth Whitening (aka Bleaching)

  • Veneers

  • Bonding

  • Clear Aligner Therapy (aka Invisalign)

Dr. Nicholson applies the same expertise and artistry when additional repairs are needed in the best interest of the patient’s health, like:

  • Tooth-colored fillings: Sometimes referred to as “composite” or “white” fillings, these are safe and durable when a cavity needs to be filled.

  • Clear Aligner Therapy also known by the trade name “Invisalign.” This is where clear removable trays are used to straighten your teeth without ugly wire braces.

  • Root Canals: Sometimes referred to as “endodontics,” root canals can save a tooth even when its soft interior (called the “pulp chamber”) becomes infected. Once we clean out what’s bothering your tooth, it will continue to function without the pain and sensitivity you were likely experiencing before the procedure.

  • Emergency care: Yes, call us. Yes, we will see you. Priority is given to regularly scheduled patients.
